A Treadmill (TMT) test, also known as a cardiac stress test, determines how much further your heart can run before developing an irregular beat or blood supply to the heart muscle. It allows your doctor to see how your heart reacts when pressed. You'll be required to walk or run, with the level of difficulty steadily increasing. The highest expected heart rate for adults is 220 - your age. So, when you're 40 yrs old, your maximum heart rate prediction becomes 220 – 40 equals 180. During diagnostic treadmill testing, some clinicians aim for 85 percent of the expected maximal heart rate. For any abnormal value, you must consult a cardiologist. Typically used to identify coronary artery disease or assess prognosis following a myocardial injury (heart condition) or coronary surgery.
